What Size Coffee Server Do You Need for Pour-Over?

Pick a coffee server for the amount you want to drink, then check that your dripper sits securely on it. A larger carafe is not automatically better for one cup. A 16 oz / about 470 ml server is a practical size to consider for one generous serving or two smaller ones, provided your brewer fits its opening.

Water poured is not coffee served

A pour-over recipe usually measures water added to the grounds. Some water stays in the used coffee and filter, so the drink collected below weighs less than the water you poured. This is why a recipe using 288 g of water does not fill a 288 ml line exactly with finished coffee.

For a repeatable starting cup, use 18 g coffee and 288 g water, then taste and adjust. Our pour-over ratio chart shows other starting points. If you make two cups, leave room in the server for the final brew and for a comfortable pour; do not fill a carafe to its rim.

Three checks before buying a server

  1. Capacity: Compare the marked capacity with the coffee you usually serve, not just the water in your recipe. Allow space above the liquid line.
  2. Dripper fit: Check that the dripper's base rests steadily on the server opening. Diameter and rim design matter; a picture of two products together is not a universal fit guarantee.
  3. Handling: Look for a handle and pouring lip that suit your counter and cups. Check the product's care instructions before putting any glass server on a heat source or in an appliance.

When does a 16 oz server make sense?

The Slow Mill 16 oz Glass Coffee Server is a separate serving vessel with a lid, handle and 4, 8, 12 and 16 oz markings. Those marks are useful for a quick view of how much is in the carafe. For exact brew ratios, weigh the coffee and water on a scale instead of relying on volume lines.

If you want the brewer and server together, the Glass Cone Pour-Over Dripper Set includes a matching glass server and 40 cone paper filters. If you already own a suitable mug or server and want a compact brewer, the Clear PC Dripper with 50 Paper Filters is another option. Check the dimensions of your own vessel before choosing either.

Quick answers

Can I brew directly into a mug?

Yes, if the dripper rests securely on the mug and the mug holds the finished coffee with room to spare. A separate server is helpful when you want to share, swirl or pour into several cups.

Does a server change the coffee ratio?

No. The ratio describes coffee and brew water. The vessel below the dripper collects the result. Choose the server for capacity and fit, then adjust the recipe by taste.
